(MENAFN – The Peninsula) The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Department of Radiation and Chemicals Protection, began the phase II of the Qatar Environmental Radiation Monitoring Program within the context of establishing an integrated system to monitor radiation levels in soil, air and water.
Through this program, radiological analysis of soil samples is carried out in areas where there are radiation stations for early warnings.
These stations measure the levels of radiation resulting from air suspensions, cosmic rays and radiation from natural and industrial radioactive elements in the soil below the station detector.
During the start of the phase II, a team of experts and engineers from the Department of Radiation and Chemicals Protection took soil samples from surface soil to a depth of 5cm from the sites surrounding the early warning stations, which are installed along the coasts and in studied places in the country for analysis in the Central Radiation Laboratory in the context of preserving human and environmental safety.
The importance of radiological analysis of soil samples around the stations is to establish a baseline for natural and artificial radioactivity concentrations, which are used in the analysis of radiation alarms in the event of leaks.
